The R+D group which surveys chambers and its members is called the World Chambers' Global Enterprise Innovation Center (GEICC). It has been engaged in several applied business research projects that touch on independent / small and midsize enterprises (SME), as well as larger enterprises (among the .:: world's largest corporations also belong to the international chamber membership roster). 

But the focus here is on SMEs... they typically make up over 90% of the businesses in a developed economy, and they also serve as a barometer of economic and business trends.
