:: Introduction and important notes:

This multi-year project (updated from an earlier project a few years back) is focused on some of the measurable impacts of 'environmental and climate changes' on independent business worldwide.

From the perspective of the responding business, the base for 'measuring' such changes and their impacts is its experience from the previous twenty years. Less emphasis is placed in this survey on differentiating impacts of climate change, weather changes, unusual environmental events, general global warming, clean air issues etc.  While distinctions between these phenomena can be very important in other research and policy discussions, the focus here is on the measurable impact and costs of 'environmental change' on the small and mid-sized enterprise (SME) - which would have a hard time distinguishing between the exact short term and long term causes of a more intense Storm that affected its business operations.

Examples of 'environmental impact' on a SME can include:

- a seasonal business operation (e.g. ski resort) which saw its typical ski season either disappear altogether, or shift into a non-traditional data range - with a lot of its seasonal workers loosing their employment.

- an intense Storm that devastated the traditional operating area for a tourist operator, such as a park, even if his/her business survived

- an unexpectedly strong series of hurricanes, tornados or floods that damaged the business' location and operation directly

- less obvious, but still measurable,  impacts relate to higher insurance costs, higher energy use costs (i.e. for air conditioning), or an extra levy to be paid by the business to shore up local dikes, or agricultural operators who might find either too little or too much water available.

- preventative steps a business takes, be it the installation of 'scrubbers' for exhaust it may be producing, or an expanded recycling program.

- Finally, there are other 'more general' costs which still have an impact but which may be harder to quantify - such as higher taxes by regional or national government to pay for environmental programs.
